I have had a personal Facebook account for some time now. I use it to keep in touch with friends, to join interest groups and also to follow how other libraries are uaing Facebook. It seems that Facebook can be useful for libraries who wish to have another tool to tell readers about opening hours, vacation borrowing, new services etc. However I am still not yet convinced that it is a good thing to set up a presence for my library in what is a predominantly a social environment.
This was my first look at Linkedin. I can see that it provides a useful way to form a network of professional contacts, and seems a much more appropriate tool for this than Facebook. I searched for and found librarians I know in specialist libraries and I can see that Linkedin would be useful for identifying an expert in a particular professional area. I can also see that joining newsgroups would be a good way of keeping up to date with professional issues.
